A business may start with an invention, a name, or a product that fills a gap in the market. As it grows, those assets raise different questions: what can be protected, who owns it, and how should the company invest in that protection?
Peter Shaddock, Senior Counsel at Davis, Burch & Abrams and a registered patent attorney, helps clients work through those questions. His practice includes patents, trademarks, copyrights, licensing, and the broader intellectual property decisions that accompany commercial growth.
From individual inventors to established companies
Peter works with individual inventors, startups, small businesses, mid-market companies, and larger enterprises. His counsel addresses the needs of a first filing as well as the priorities of a business developing a broader intellectual property portfolio.
That range matters when a company’s needs change. An early discussion may concern protecting a new idea. Later, the business may need to evaluate filing priorities, licensing opportunities, or how its intellectual property supports a transaction.
Connecting brand protection with the business
For trademark clients, Peter’s broader IP background brings context to the discussion. A company’s name and logo sit alongside its products, technology, creative work, and contractual rights. Decisions about one asset can affect the value and use of the others.
His work includes helping clients assess protection options, portfolio development, commercialization, and the relationship between intellectual property and long-term business value. Patent prosecution and filing strategy
Peter prepares and prosecutes patent applications and advises clients on USPTO filings, office action responses, invention protection, and related ownership and commercialization issues. His role is to help clients decide what to protect, when to pursue protection, and how the filing strategy serves the business behind the invention.
Education and admissions
Peter earned his B.S. from Bob Jones University and his J.D. from Regent University School of Law. His published admissions include the Supreme Court of Virginia and registration as a patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
